Capitals and Bases

Capitals and Bases

The style of any column is punctuated by its capital and base. No architectural look is complete without the stunning symmetry of the perfect column and base combination. Hardwood columns can be accented with a wide variety of capitals and bases. Bases typically come in main two styles; the refined, but simplistic Tuscan, and the subtly detailed Attic. In general, base sizes vary to accommodate 6"" to 24"" column diameters and are available in several types of wood. Either base can equally enhance the entire look of the column and can be adapted to nearly any capital. Common hardwood species include mahogany, red wood, cherry, walnut, and pine which are available in any custom size and style. Regardless of your project needs, a complete set of hardwood columns, capitals, and bases are a timeless addition to any property.

No column is complete without a historically and architecturally correct capital. Various capital styles are available, including the more festive and decorative Roman Corinthian and Temple of Winds. These traditional Mediterranean fashions have remained in architectural design for thousands of years. More subdued capitals include Roman Doric Ornamental, Tuscan Capital, Roman Ionic, Greek Angular Ionic, Greek Erectheum, Scamozzi and Empire. Like bases, capital sizes typically are as large as the base, and from one to six inches wider than the column itself. Whatever your individual preference, any of these hardwood pieces is sure to enhance the beauty and prominence of your home or building structure.

To preserve the integrity and natural beauty of wood bases and capitals, they are coated in a wood preservative that preps them for both priming and staining; while also providing protection against fungi, mildew, decay, warping, splitting and shrinking. Regardless of personal taste, each of these products is sure to enrich the aesthetics of your exterior for years to come.
